Early detection of sexually transmitted diseases is essential as it can prevent further transmission of the disease as well as it can prevent further complication if the condition is left untreated. This screen will test for the most common sexually transmitted diseases in both male and female including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes and viral infections (HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C). HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attaches the cells of the immune system causing AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV is transmitted through blood by having unprotected sex with an infected partner, or by sharing needles during drug use. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are also transmitted through blood, semen and vaginal fluid as well as by infected needles.
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are transmitted through sexual contact (oral, vaginal, anal) with an infected person. An infected mother can transmit the infection to her baby during childbirth, which puts the baby at high risk of developing lung infection or an inflammation that can affect eyesight. Symptoms in women can include bleeding between menstrual cycles, painful intercourse and an abnormal vaginal discharge. In men, symptoms include pus discharge from the penis, inflammation of the prostate or rectal area. Both genders can experience frequent urination. Treatment is available yet infection can lead to serious complication such as infertility (Men and Women) and high risk of potentially life threatening tubal (ectopic) pregnancy.
There are two types of herpes virus, which are HSV-1 and HSV-2. Type one usually causes cold sores however both types can cause genital herpes. A person who has been infected with genital herpes may shed the virus without lesions and infect others. Herpes virus is transmitted through direct contact, which includes kissing, vaginal, oral or anal sex. Symptoms may include painful lesions at the site of infection, which may appear within two weeks following infection. Other symptoms include painful urination, urethral or vaginal discharge or bleeding from the anus.
